Johnny Rawls was born in Mississippi where his blind grandfather taught him the rudiments of guitar. As a teenager he was already good enough to play with musicians touring the deep South such as Z. Z. Hill and Joe Tex and their deep soul style was to have an enormous influence on his later music. However, it was O. V. Wright who was most important to the young musician and Johnny played with O. V. until the latter's death in 1980.

Since then he has released more than a dozen albums and appears at as many as 12 festivals a year in the US and Canada. He has been showered with awards and his contemporary soul style is recognized as a very important contribution to black music.

His dark golden voice and charismatic but relaxed stage presence guarantee success at this, his first visit to Blues to Bop.
