The Friersons return to Lugano after their incredible success at last year’s festival. This musically talented family has been performing for over 40 years, ever since Joe Frierson, Sr. travelled throughout the south with his growing family. As years went by, all the children, now 10 in number began taking part in singing and acting classes in school where they also learned to play various instruments. By 1973 their records and concerts were getting rave reviews on gospel radio and in the community but life changed suddenly for the Friersons when both their father and their sister Sarah died. Sarah had been lead singer and for three years after her loss the group seemed to lose interest in gospel singing but they re-grouped in 1977 and have continued to abide by the principle, “A family that prays together, stays together.”
When artists are invited back to Lugano they are presented in fresh contexts so Franklin Frierson was asked not only if he could add female singers to the group but if this extended formation could also play secular Rhythm ‘n Blues. Frank accepted the challenge and chose “The Soul Singers” three of the top vocalists in the whole New York area who have collaborated and recorded with Earth Wind and Fire, Patti LaBelle and Aretha Franklin so their range is as wide as it gets!
This specially assembled group now has three male and three female singers plus a four piece band. They have diligently rehearsed what will be unique concerts heard only in Lugano and which are sure to be remembered for years to come.
