Born in Texas but brought up in the northern part of Mississippi, Richard Johnston was fascinated by and inspired by the last of the singers in the great tradition of the state that gave birth to the blues inspired music we know today: Junior Kimborough, R.L.Burnside and T-Model Ford. But his music is more eclectic and personal than such sources might suggest, a blend that is made more remarkable by the way he has constructed a mix of instruments that, played simultaneously, give him the impact of a quartet. Hill-Country Blues is the label Johnston gives to his music but all those who have seen and heard him know that he is the most incredible “one off”.
