Nonostante le numerose apparizioni a Blues to Bop, la popolarità personale che ha conquistato grazie alla bravura, alla disponibilità e alla simpatia (e soprattutto alla sua bravura tecnica legata all'esperienza di tutta una vita), hanno fatto diventare Stan Bronstein un sidesman voluto da tutti.

Stan imparò a suonare il clarinetto da ragazzo ma passó al sax durante i suoi quattro anni di servizio militare. Diventò membro dell’orchestra di Tommy Dorsey e poi si esibì con Larry Elgart. Giunto a New York, trovò posto in diverse tra le piú importanti orchestre latino-americane, comprese quelle di Machito e Tito Puente. Formó il proprio gruppo, il leggendario "Elephant’s Memory”, con cui pubblicò 4 LP prima di suonare come solista per la "Fantasy Records". Qualche fatto per illustrare una lunga carriera tra le piú variate: ha registrato “Same Old Song” con le Arrowsmith; ha registrato con Davis Johansen and the New York Dolls, ebbe la sua “Swing Fever” durante gli anni '80 e una lunga collaborazione con John Lennon, con cui effettuò numerose registrazioni e qualche famoso video.

Anche quest’anno Stan Bronstein è stato chiamato ad arricchire una delle formazioni create appositamente per il Blues to Bop.

Despite his many appearances at Blues to Bop and the popularity he has earned, Stan Bronstein has never featured in our programme before. Stan first learned clarinet as a boy but chose the sax during his four years military service in the navy. On discharge he immediately turned professional playing with the Dorsey Band and Larry Elgart. On his return to New York he played with many of the leading latin bands, Tito Puente and Machito included, before forming the now legendary “Elephant’s Memory” that produced 4 LPs and two solo LPs on the Fantasy label. During a wide and varied career during which he has gained the admiration of many colleagues active in very different fields of music, he has collaborated on what at first seem like the most unlikely projects for a jazzman: he plays on Arrowsmiths’ “The Same Old Song” and also with David Johansen and the New York Dolls, while it was Stan’s band that John Lennon took over during the last years of his career in New York.

Once again Blues to Bop has been able to count on the presence of this experienced, superlative player to take part in one of the groups created for the Festival.
