Sisters of the South

Blues classici al femminile   Beverly “Guitar” Watkins Sweet Betty Essie Mae Brooks Diunna Greenleaf Ardie Dean Larry Lee Greg Rowell   Tim Duffy, founder and director of the Music Maker Relief Foundation is an old friend of Blues to Bop.  In fact, on many occasions he has stressed that it was the success Guitar Gabriel had here in Lugano that convinced that it would be possible to present authentic blues artists to general audiences in America.  “Sisters of the South” has been formed to give witness to the role women have had in the Blues which is often considered an exclusively male domain.  Each one of these singers has experiences the hard times due to their race, the area the lived in and the period in which the grew up but they are all survivors.  Each one has a story to tell and each one has been active in the music all her life. Theirs is a music that helped them survive, that offered them at least temporary escape from the grinding poverty of lives of backbreaking work and family responsibilities.  The fact that they are able to come to Switzerland confirms the value not only of their own indomitable spirits but of the musical culture that sustained them emotionally through many difficult years.     Tim Duffy, fondatore della Music Relief Foundation, è un vecchio amico di Blues to Bop.  Profondamente commosso dall’accoglienza accordata a Guitar Gabe, che aveva accompagnato a Lugano in occasione della sua prima visita dall'America, Tim decise di presentare artisti considerati ‘per intenditori’ ad un pubblico piú vasto quale quello di Lugano. Con le Sisters of the South, Duffy intende proporre la medesima cosa per le "donne del blues", “Donne che, grazie ai loro diversi talenti lasciano nell'ascoltatore un senso profondo della bellezza e della maestà dello spirito umano”. Queste artiste hanno vissuto sulla propria pelle le difficoltà dovute alla loro razza, il loro sesso, loro stato sociale e i tempi e i luoghi in cui sono cresciute, e ne sono sopravissute trionfanti.  Il ruolo delle donne è sempre stato sottovalutato in un mondo dominato da musicisti maschi e, infatti, qualsiasi forma di espressione per loro è sempre stata difficile. Era un ambiente dove doveva prevalere il senso del dovere verso la famiglia e la dipendenza dal mondo bianco per gli scarsi posti di lavoro.  Ma le nostre quattro cantanti sono una vera testimonianza e un numero, pur limitato, di donne eccezionali che hanno saputo lottare con successo, creando una musica straordinariamente ‘vissuta’.
