Kent è
un personaggio quasi unico nel Blues, essendo un bassista
che canta e contemporaneamente dirige un proprio gruppo.
E’ senz’altro uno dei migliori bassisti della
sua generazione, valutazione confermata dai quattro W.C.
Handy Awards che ha vinto.
Nonostante questa sua statura, che ha acquisito in
un campo molto competitivo e ricco di giovani talenti,
Willie Kent non ama mettersi in luce con grandi assoli,
probabilmente perché nacque nel Mississippi e, come i
bluesmen degli anni '40, '50 e '60, è la canzone che lo
interessa piú che lo strumento. Come Muddy Waters e
Howlin’ Wolf infatti, Willie è dotato di una voce
calda, potente e molto espressiva.
La sua canzone “Born in the Delta” è
autobiografica e dipinge a toni forti la sua vita: iniziò
a lavorare nei campi di cotone a soli nove anni
(un'esistenza quindi apparentemente senza speranza) finché
non si spostò al nord dove, suonando il Blues, trovò un
motivo di svago e una preziosa opportunità di guadagnare
qualche dollaro in piú, dopo una settimana di dura fatica
manuale pagata male.
Willie Kent rimane fedele alle sue radici, anche se
amare, ma riesce ad incorporare elementi di soul e Rhythm
‘n Blues in modo da aggiornare questa musica nata nel
Mississippi senza peró perdere il suo spessore culturale.

Willie, è molto legata ai Blues del Mississippi. Appare
regolarmente con The Gents a Chicago, dove è molto
apprezzata per la sottile carica emotiva con cui affronta
anche i temi tradizionali.

Kent is
almost a unique figure in the Blues world; a bassist who
fills the roles of singer and bandleader. His stature as one of the very best bassists is confirmed by
the four W.C. Handy Awards that he has won and this
without being in any way a flashy soloist.
Perhaps because his roots are in Mississippi he
concentrates on the songs and the emotional impact of his
words, as did the great singers of the 40s, 50s and 60s,
letting his powerful and expressive voice carry his
message. His “Born in the Delta” is an autobiographical blues that
tells how his life (cotton fields at the age of nine,
backbreaking labour in Chicago as a young man) mirrors
that of the thousands who migrated from the South to the
Windy City. His
new album “Comin’ Alive!” shows not only just how
faithful Willie Kent has remained to his roots but how he
has successfully incorporated soul and Rhythm ‘n Blues
elements in the creation of a modern sound that loses none
of the original cultural depth.

where she is treasured for the subtle emotional range she
imposes on even the best known standards.
