The Claire Powell Trio
classic American songbook
Claire Powell, soprano voice
Klaus Moerth, saxes, clarinet, bass clarinet
Marius Stieghorst, piano
Claire was born in the UK and is of Spanish and Cornish ancestry. She started singing professionally in folk clubs at the age of 14. At the time her ambition was to become 'a song and dance lady' and an actress. She was heard by a professor of singing who suggested that she should have her voice trained classically. Claire still hasn't worked out if that was a good thing or a bad thing!
She studied piano, double bass and voice at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London and later won a scholarship to the London Opera Centre, from where she made her debut at the Royal Opera House.
She has since sung there regularly throughout her career; Eboli in "Don Carlo", Dalila in "Samson and Dalila", Orlofsky in "Die Fledermaus" and many others. Her colleagues include Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Monserrat Caballe and the late Freddie Mercury.
Despite spending most of her career in opera theatres around the world she has never forgotten her 'club' roots and welcomed the invitation to Lugano where she is appearing with Marius Stieghorst and Kurt Mörth, like herself classically trained musicians. The beauty and power of her voice, her dramatic presence on stage and the grace if her interpretations of the American songbook will add a new dimension to the Blues to Bop experience.
