Hayes
Il
musicista cinquantenne Hayes è stato molto influenzato da Jimmy Reed,
che ascoltava da giovane alla radio e sui juke box. Il bluesman con cui
ha collaborato a lungo è stato Guitar Gabe, uno dei primi bluesmen
della Carolina, che ha visitato il nostro festival.
Il suo stile è molto legato ai juke blues degli anni Cinquanta:
Hayes coinvolge i suoi ascoltatori grazie all’autenticità del suo
stile musicale e alla sua vita vissuta tra il blues rurale.
Hayes
first fell under the influence of blues legend Jimmy Reed who he
listened to on the radio and on record but the bluesman he worked with
most was Guitar Gabe. Many
visitors to Blues to Bop will remember this extraordinary artist who
visited Lugano more times than any other city outside America.
Hayes’ style is that of the juke blues of the fifties and he
creates real ‘happenings” rather than straightforward concerts as he
weaves his magic around themes old and new.
Carl
Hodges
Chitarrista
della Virginia, Carl Hodges effettuò delle registrazioni per il
produttore Pete Welding nel 1961 e per il folklorista Kip Lornell nel
1979. Questi dischi ebbero un successo limitato nel mercato
specializzato del country blues europeo, e non sono serviti a procurare
molto lavoro a Hodges. Deluso,
abbandonò la musica finchè la Music Maker Foundation non gli
trovò una nuova chitarra e la possibilità di tenere ancora concerti.
Da quel momento le cose sono andate molto bene a Hodges, che ha suonato
in numerosi concerti in America, mentre è ospite di Blues to Bop in
occasione della sua seconda visita in Europa.

guitarist Carl Hodges recorded for Pete Welding in 1961 (two sides,
Blues All Around My Bed and Standing at the Greyhound Bus Station were
issued on Savoy LP 181, Milestone LP 3002, and Storyville 842); he was
also recorded by folklorist Kip Lornell in 1979 (two sides appear on
Global Village's Virginia Traditions: Tidewater Blues CD, Global Village
CD 1006). Hodges had quit his music in more recent years, but began
playing again after the Music Maker Foundation provided him with a
guitar and booked him some gigs; he has since traveled to Holland to
perform at Blues Estafette so Blues to Bop is only the second “big”
occasion on which he is sure to make many fans.
