- Oliver
Lake cresce a St. Louis, dove a vent’anni sceglie definitivamente la
propria strada. Compie studi molto severi, nella linea dei più
giovani e colti esponenti della nuova musica afro-americana: la
“musica creativa”, come viene spesso nominata. Studia anche
arrangiamento e musica elettronica, e comincia la pratica
d’improvvisazione con
gruppi di Rhythm ‘n Blues che comprendono anche Lester Bowie
e Phillip Wilson.
Alle fine degli anni ’60 è uno dei fondatori di una
cooperativa di creativi neri impegnati in varie attività artistiche.
Stabilitosi a New York all’inizio degli anni ’60 dopo un soggiorno
a Parigi, ha effettuato una lunga serie di ricerche e registrazioni.
E’ famoso per l’utilizzo dell’espressione spontanea, che
inserisce secondo strutture molto diverse. Tra i suoi linguaggi
musicali preferiti tiene in grande considerazione sia i blues sia i
gospel, ed è uno dei motivi per cui ha immediatamente accettato
l’invito a suonare questi generi a Lugano.
Blues to Bop non ha mai osato presentare un jazzman
contemporaneo di questa statura nel suo ambiente festoso, ma è sicuro
che Lake saprà divertire e divertirsi con il pubblico luganese: i
momenti spirituals che ha in serbo per il nostro festival si
preannunciano particolarmente suggestivi.

Lake was raised in St. Louis where he had early experience in Rhythm
‘n Blues bands.
He helped to found a cooperative of Black Artists active in
various fields and in the late ‘60s they all moved to Paris.
When he returned to America, Lake settled in New York and was
soon involved in the loft scene where his magnificently mature talents
were regularly to be heard.
Though never a truly abstract player, in the sense that his
improvisations retained tenuous links with themes on which they were
based Lake has always been on the cutting edge of the contemporary
scene.
He is the first contemporary jazz figure of major stature to be
invited to Blues to Bop.
When asked to partecipate, after a big band concert at Sweet
Basil in Manhattan he laughed out loud at the thought of the fun he
would have going back to his roots!
Oliver has also agreed to play spirituals during the gospel
concert on Sunday.
