Michael Messer’s latest album, the superb Second Mind was voted ‘Best Blues Guitar Album Of The Year’ by the International Guitar Federation, ahead of Chris Rea, Eric Bibb, Sonny Landreth and Aynsley Lister but even this superb album does not convey the virtuosity and energy with which Messer and his band rocks and rolls during their live performances. The band plays contemporary blues that has its heart in the Mississippi delta country and in urban Chicago but the way in which Messer’s electric slide guitar dialogues with the sampling and scratching from young Louie Genis’s turntable and collection of old blues vinyl is something completely new. Blues music has always known how to renew itself and stay contemporary without losing its soul and Michael Messer, together with co-author Terry Clarke, has created a new fusion which will secure a new future for the music. Not to be missed!
